The iconic Volvo XC70 returns with a bold new identity, ready to shake up the hybrid SUV market
Volvo is preparing to make waves with the global reveal of its next-generation Volvo XC70, which now emerges as a mid-size SUV rather than its traditional high-riding estate form. Scheduled to premiere in China this September, the latest iteration is a key step in the automaker’s hybrid strategy.
A New Form with Fresh Intent
With dimensions stretching to 4.81 meters in length and nearly 1.89 meters in width, the redesigned Volvo XC70 promises a strong presence on the road. It’s aimed squarely at contenders like the Hyundai Santa Fe and Volkswagen Tayron, focusing on both comfort and tech-savvy features for urban and suburban drivers.
The new Volvo XC70 ditches diesel entirely, embracing the plug-in hybrid powertrain model. This signals a clear pivot for Volvo as it edges closer to full electrification in the coming years.

Electric Power Meets Long-Distance Flexibility
Volvo will offer the SUV with two battery choices:
- A 21.2kWh pack delivering up to 100km (62 miles) of electric range.
- A larger 39.6kWh battery, which extends the range to 180km (112 miles).
These figures are based on China’s CLTC cycle, offering ideal performance for daily city commutes and short intercity trips.

Hybrid Engine Options with AWD Available
The vehicle will pair a 160-horsepower 1.5L petrol engine with an electric motor. Customers can choose between front-wheel and all-wheel drive setups, making it suitable for a wide range of terrains and use cases. This configuration was recently listed in documents submitted to China’s automotive regulatory authority, confirming details ahead of the formal debut.

CEO’s Vision: Plug-in Hybrids as Practical EV Alternatives
Volvo’s CEO, Håkan Samuelsson, expressed strong support for hybrids in markets where full electrification remains a challenge. “In many regions, charging infrastructure is still catching up. A plug-in hybrid with good range ensures electric driving is possible while maintaining fuel flexibility,” he said.
The strategy reflects Volvo’s balanced approach to sustainable mobility, offering eco-friendly driving without range anxiety.

Global Expansion on the Cards
Although the Volvo XC70’s initial launch is focused on the Chinese market, Volvo has indicated the model could later be introduced in other regions. With demand rising for low-emission, fuel-efficient vehicles, the revamped Volvo XC70 could find strong appeal across Europe and beyond.
