Land Rover Freelander to Return as Electric SUV

After years of silence, the Freelander name is making a surprise comeback—this time as a fully electric SUV. Land Rover’s parent company, Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), is teaming up with its long-time Chinese partner Chery Automobile to develop and manufacture this next-generation model, which will be built exclusively in China.

Built on Chery’s EV Platform, Not Engineered by JLR UK

Unlike its earlier versions, the new Freelander won’t use Land Rover’s in-house platform. Instead, it will be built on Chery’s flexible T1X electric architecture, already proven across multiple models in China. JLR and Chery had jointly contributed to this platform’s development since 2016, but final control remains with the Chinese automaker.

Launch in China First, Followed by Global Expansion

Chery will roll out the new Freelander series in the Chinese market first, where demand for electric vehicles is at an all-time high. JLR is considering expanding to international markets in the next phase, depending on early success.

Plug-In Hybrid First, All-Electric to Follow

Early models of the Freelander are expected to include a plug-in hybrid powertrain, with fully electric versions entering production later. Reports suggest that higher-end variants could feature dual-motor configurations and offer driving ranges exceeding 600 kilometers, catering to tech-savvy and range-conscious consumers.

A More Premium Identity for Freelander

The revived Freelander will take on a more refined, upscale positioning than its earlier versions. While design contributions are likely to come from both JLR and Chery, the vehicle’s platform, technology, and production strategy will be directed by Chery.

Strategic Shift in JLR’s China Portfolio

This new direction comes as JLR restructures its Chinese operations. Several Jaguar models—including the XE, XF, and E-Pace—are being phased out. Land Rover’s locally manufactured Evoque and Discovery Sport models will also be discontinued by 2026, clearing the path for more EV-focused products tailored to the Chinese market.

JLR Betting Big on China’s EV Future

With China leading global EV adoption, JLR aims to reposition its brand in this competitive space through strategic partnerships and market-specific offerings. The Freelander’s electric reboot could help the company regain traction in one of its most crucial markets, while contributing to its broader sustainability goals.
